Flint, MI – Back by popular demand, the Flint Registry and Greater Flint Health Coalition are excited to present the second annual virtual Men’s Health Week December 13-17. Each day will provide an interactive panel conversation via Zoom (link below) from 11:30am – 12:30pm. Panelists include community leaders with a wide variety of backgrounds and areas of expertise. Men’s Health Week is free and no pre-registration is needed.
The Flint Registry’s Second Annual Men’s Health Week is designed to provide support for men in Flint and Genesee County while sparking conversations, creating relationships, eliminating stigma, and encouraging eligible men to enroll in the Flint Registry.
“I am excited to be able to participate in men’s health week again.” said Royce Stevens, Flint resident and Flint Registry survey director. “Many men have been taught that they have to basically be invincible and that they do not have to worry about their health. This includes myself. I have since learned that this was not realistic. I love sharing what I have learned about the importance of taking care of my health.”
The Flint Registry is a resource to support the Flint community and the goal is to refer people to services to reduce the impact of lead on their health. The Flint Registry is working to reach as many people as possible to learn about how the water crisis has impacted their health. Every person and every story is important.
To date, over 17,700 individuals have enrolled in the Flint Registry; however, of the enrolled adults, only 31% are men. You can enroll today through the Flint Registry website (www.flintregistry.org). The Flint Registry is for anyone who was exposed to lead-contaminated water in the City of Flint because they lived, worked, attended school or daycare between April 25, 2014, and October 15, 2015, at any address serviced by the Flint water system.
From stress management to self-care, the Men’s Health schedule includes:
Men’s Health Week Schedule
December 13 – Man Up Monday
Studies show men would rather do almost anything else instead of going to a doctor. Why do many men avoid seeing a doctor? Does seeing a doctor equal weakness?
December 14 – Stressed Out and Trying Not to Lose My Head
Historically, men were taught to hold in their feelings. However, we know that suppressing feelings and emotions can be detrimental to a man’s mental health. Men are 3 to 4 times more likely to die by suicide and have higher rates of alcohol misuse. Emotional honesty and thinking beyond stereotypes just may be the start to mental wellness.
December 15 – The Scoop on Talking to Men About Their Health
A lot of men prefer not to talk about their health. How should someone who cares initiate a conversation?
December 16 – Self-Regulation: Respond, Don’t React
Self-control can turn a bad situation into a positive outcome. Have you ever said to yourself, “If I took the time to think before reacting, I would have saved myself from…”
December 17 – Self-Care Isn’t Selfish
Self-care for men is on the rise. More men are realizing that self-care is simply resetting their mind and body. This practice encourages men to listen to their bodies, exercise often, eat healthy meals and snacks, and get at least seven hours of sleep each night.
